Bigger & Better: Inside America's Largest Healthcare Construction Project

The new Indiana University Health hospital in downtown Indianapolis is one of the most ambitious healthcare projects underway in the United States. Spanning multiple city blocks and consolidating major clinical programs with the Indiana University School of Medicine, the project represents a bold rethinking of how healthcare campuses can function in the future.

While your organization is likely not building at this scale, the lessons in planning, flexibility, and long-term thinking apply to healthcare facilities everywhere.

Jim Mladucky, Vice President of Design and Construction for IU Health, will share an inside look at the strategy behind this transformative project. Learn how "thinking big" through large-scale investment can improve operational efficiency and clinical collaboration, and position a health system for the next generation of care.

Surgery Without the Hospital:
The ASC Revolution

Across the country, more surgical procedures are shifting from hospital operating rooms to Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs). The trend is driven by powerful forces: patient convenience, lower costs, improved efficiency, and evolving reimbursement models.

Healthcare architect and TedX speaker William "Willy" Schlein will explore how this shift is transforming surgical care -- and what healthcare facilities leaders need to know as ASCs continue to expand.

Using real-world examples, this session will examine how these facilities are designed, where they fit within health systems, and how they support both financial performance and patient access.

For organizations evaluating outpatient strategy, ASCs are quickly becoming an important option for healthcare organizations of all sizes.

Session C

Future-Proofing Your Emergency Department

Learn what to do and what not to do when planning your new Emergency Department in this presentation led by an experienced emergency responder who’s witnessed hundreds of EDs firsthand.

No one wants their ED to be dated on day one. Unfortunately, the clinicians who began the design process may not even be working there by the time the project is complete.

In this informative presentation, you'll learn how better-defined spaces will still make sense when the project is complete -- and remain adaptable to changing needs and unforeseen surge populations for years to come. The presentation will include tips for the integration of FGI Guidelines for Emergency Conditions.

Integration between technology and the built environment is critical. This requires multiple, informed perspectives. Gary Schindele and David Denneno will present success stories of how interdisciplinary design teams, in concert with clinical providers, created agile, modular, future-proofed ED spaces.
